When Abby Lawrence first visited New Song Mission in Nashville, Indiana, she came to interview for a teaching position. What she didn’t expect was that the conversation would shift toward something even bigger—an opportunity for her and her husband, Isaac, to become houseparents.
Abby and Isaac had always shared a heart for helping children who need extra care and consistency. When New Song’s team mentioned houseparenting, it felt like a natural fit. Still, Abby admits she had doubts. “I was concerned whether I could handle houseparenting as a young person with no children,” she said. But after some reflection—and with Isaac’s steady confidence (“he was all gas, no brakes,” she laughed)—she found peace in saying yes.
At the time, New Song Mission was preparing for a new school year with nearly 20 students hoping to enroll—but no houseparents and no teacher in place. The Lawrences’ willingness to serve arrived just when they were needed most.
There was one challenge: Isaac planned to keep his full-time job off campus, leaving Abby to manage the home for long stretches each day. When it became clear that more help would be needed, Abby reached out to her longtime friend, Katie Hill, who was also looking for meaningful work with kids. Katie quickly joined the team, bringing her own warmth and enthusiasm to the household.
By early August, Abby and Isaac were officially hired—alongside Katie and a new teacher, Alex Shelton. Two weeks later, the home that had been waiting for its family was filled with energy, laughter, and a sense of new beginnings.
In this short video, Abby shares what her first week as a housemom has been like. From managing daily routines to building trust with kids who are still getting to know her, she talks candidly about the learning curve, the surprises, and the joy of watching small connections start to form.
Her story is a glimpse into what happens when people step into a role that blends family life, service, and purpose.
